Learning Hangeul (Korean Language)

When: In 2001/2002, after watching the drama Winter Sonata.

How: I learnt it on my own. From the textbooks - Language Education Institute of Seoul National University (Volume 1 - 3). It was through my korean pen-pal, Yoon Hoon-Ki. He couriered the textbook and casettees to me in KL. Subsequently, if I knew my colleagues going on business trip to Seoul, I will ask them to buy the learning books and casettees for me too.

Me and Yoon Hoon-Ki

Why: Curious!

Difficulty: Yes, it's difficult. This language don't make full use of alphabet from A to Z. It have different consonants and vowels too. Different level of conversation will be used depend on different caste/level of people (e.g. subordinates to managers, children to parents, younger sister to elder brother, etc). They don't emphasized "I" when they talk to anybody. Their romanize strokes are not easy to learn. If you do not practice it and speak them everyday, you will forget very easily!!

Summary of the Romanization System
(1) VOWELS

a) simple vowels

b) diphthongs

Note : -l is transcribed as ui, even when pronounced as l .

(2) CONSONANTS

a) plovsives (stops)

b) affricates

c) fricatives

d) nasals

e) liquids
